A Must-Read Guide: How to Boost Your Immune System During Pregnancy?

1/13/2021

Picture
During pregnancy, our body’s immunity is perfectly timed to ensure you and your baby’s protection. The immune system is aggressive during implantation to help the fetus get fully established.

After that, your immune system decreases, to protect the baby. If your immune system is very active, it might confuse the baby and treat it as a foreign body. This could potentially cause your immune system to invade or attack the fetus.

Your immune system returns to a more aggressive state once the delivery time is approaching, to help induce labor. But most of the pregnancy, the immune system stays lowered to protect the baby.

Having a lowered immune system makes you more susceptible to infectious diseases like the flu, COVID-19, etc. And getting sick during pregnancy is not fun.

When you’re pregnant, taking the medication you’re used to having when you’re sick is not possible. At least not with peace of mind, and certain diseases could harm the baby.

The best way to avoid getting sick while pregnant is to naturally boost your immune system. And also maintain it postpartum, to keep you and the baby safe.
These Are The Top 8 Tips to Help You Boost Your Immune System During Pregnancy
1. Eat Healthy Foods.
Eating healthy food doesn’t mean you have to eat steamed veggies every day. It means to include all the food groups on your diet— like protein, carbs, healthy fats, etc. A healthy diet is the foundation of a good immune system.

Eating whole foods, having well-balanced meals, and skipping processed, chemicals-loaded foods helps maintain your health. This is also critical for your baby’s growth.

If you’re not sure how to integrate a healthy diet into your lifestyle, speak to a nutritionist.

2. Sleep Well
Many pregnancy symptoms affect your sleep, like nausea and vomiting, leg cramps, fetal movement, physical uncomfortableness, etc. This is all perfectly normal while expecting, but sleeping has a major role in our immune system.

Our immune system releases proteins during sleep. These proteins are called cytokines. Your body needs these proteins to fight against infections and inflammation. A lack of sleep may decrease the production of these protective proteins. ¹

My recommendation is to get a full eight hours of sleep plus a short nap during the day if possible. When expecting, a few extra hours of sleep are often necessary, especially in the first few months.

Embrace this beautiful time and listen to your body. If you’re feeling tired, even if you slept your eight hours or more, take a break or a nap. Your body needs the rest.

3. Exercise And Stay Active
If your care provider hasn’t limited your physical activity, exercise is a great way to boost your immune system. Along with a healthy diet, exercise leads to good health and it boosts your immune system.

Working out contributes to a healthy pregnancy by promoting good circulation. This lets your cells to move freely through your body and work efficiently. Also, exercise helps blood flow to your womb, which is crucial for a growing fetus.

Try to practice any type of exercise you feel comfortable doing, like walking, biking, dancing, etc.

4.
Practice Meditation
Stress has a direct impact on your immune system. Stress hormones like cortisol, lower the number of white cells responsible for fighting infections in your body.

Meditation is a great way to manage your anxiety and stress. The sense of peace and calmness you get when meditating benefits not only your emotional well-being but also your overall health.

Meditation boosts your immune system by helping you control stress and anxiety.

Two great apps to start meditating or get back to it are Headspace and Meditation-Time. They’re my favorite and they’re easy to use and integrate into your daily life.
5. Stay up to Date With Vaccination
Having the necessary vaccines— like the flu shot and whooping cough (called Tdap)— it’s very important during pregnancy. They’re key to protect yourself and your baby.

The immunity vaccines give you, protect your baby from certain diseases during the first few months of life. ²
6. Drink Non-Dairy Golden Milk,
Golden milk, an Indian beverage also known as turmeric milk, is an immune-boosting drink. Its main ingredients are turmeric, ginger, and plant-based milk. This drink is loaded with antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Its main ingredient, turmeric, has a compound called curcumin. Curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties that boost your immune system. ³

Another main ingredient, ginger, has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which also boost immunity. ⁴
To prepare golden milk you need:
  • ½  cup of plant-based unsweetened milk (almond or oat mil are good options)
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric
  • A small piece of grated ginger
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon
  • Honey to taste (optional)
Directions: Mix all the ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Strain and serve warm.
7. Protect Your Skin And Use Pregnancy-Safe Cosmetics
Your skin is the largest organ of your body, and its main job is to protect you from bacteria and environmental toxins. When the outer layer of the skin is well-hydrated and healthy, it gets toxins out and it carries nutrients into your skin’s cells.

Anything you put in your skin gets absorbed into your bloodstream. This is why pregnancy-safe products are so important. Using cosmetics with harmful ingredients could harm you or your baby.

For this reason, we ensure all of our products are pregnancy-safe. Our 100% Natural DNA Protection Moisturizer keeps your skin hydrated and healthy. Its formulation helps to filter out any questionable ingredients for the fetus like phenoxyethanol, phthalates, essential oils, witch hazel, etc.

This moisturizer was formulated with expecting women in mind, so you have peace of mind when following your skincare routine.

A well-moisturized skin is also less sensitive to irritants and germs slipping through the lipid barrier when your skin is dry. Shop for our moisturizer here.
8. Eat Greek Yogurt
Yogurt has an immune-boosting effect on your body. It contains live and active cultures, and probiotics, which help stimulate the immune system and fight off disease.

Greek yogurt is also high on calcium, vitamins, protein, and promotes good gut health.

Tip: Use vitamin D3 fortified yogurt. Vitamin D has the potential to prevent illnesses such as the common cold and flu. ⁵

Is Clean Beauty Really Worth It? Everything You Need To Know

12/2/2020

Picture

The clean beauty movement is taking the world by storm. Consumers are now aware of the harmful ingredients used in their personal care products. And they want better, healthier options.

But with the rise of many “clean beauty brands”, questions about these trendy products rose too. Are they better? Are they effective? Is clean beauty worth it?
Clean beauty brands claim to have “safer, healthier” cosmetics. But what does it entitle to call a cosmetic “clean” or “natural”?
Words like “natural, clean, green, non-toxic, eco” aren’t regulated by the government.
This means any beauty company can claim to have “clean” products. They’re allowed to use those words in their labels, without having to prove if they use clean ingredients.

So how do you know which products are really healthier and better for you? What does clean beauty even mean? Let’s answer all those questions.

  • What is clean beauty? Is it truly Better For Your Skin?
Clean beauty focuses on crafting products that are good for you and the planet. In other words, the ingredients used in clean cosmetics are mostly plant-based and non-toxic for humans.
And if you think your makeup or skincare products have no toxic ingredients, think again. There are 82,000 different ingredients used in cosmetics and personal care products. 14,000 of those ingredients are industrial chemicals. This list includes carcinogenic, hormone disruptors, and pesticides— all used on your personal care products.
And it’s perfectly legal in the United States to use those harmful chemicals on the products you put on your skin.
Just like you watch what you eat, you need to keep an eye on what you put on your skin too. The cosmetics you use on your skin are absorbed and get into your bloodstream.
When you’re trying to eat healthier, you avoid processed foods, loaded with chemicals and colorants. You also need to avoid those chemicals on your personal care products.
Not only is clean beauty better for your skin— but it’s also better for your health.

  • Is Clean Beauty Safer?
When a label says clean, natural, green… it doesn't mean the product is safe.
First, the lack of regulations allows brands to label their products as clean, even if they aren’t.
Also, there are many natural ingredients, like essential oils, which could cause irritation or even be harmful to your skin. The safety of other natural ingredients, like witch hazel, hasn’t been evaluated. More research is needed to know if it’s truly safe for humans.
Aloe Vera is a super-hydrating natural ingredient. It has many benefits but it may cause an allergic reaction in people with a latex allergy.
Choosing the right clean ingredients in your skincare is crucial. A label saying a product is clean or natural doesn’t make it safer. But if they’re using plant-based and natural ingredients instead of harmful chemicals, it does make a difference.
The most important thing is knowing what ingredients work for your body. Some natural ingredients might be amazing for some people, but not great for others.
Learning about the ingredients in your cosmetics is key. Always read the label, especially the ingredient list, before buying any personal care products.
If you find many ingredients you can’t pronounce, it’s better to switch or do research on each ingredient.
Clean beauty is technically safer, but it’s up to you to ensure you’re buying cosmetics with clean, high-quality ingredients. You should also know which ingredients work best for your unique skin.

  • How to Know if a Product is Both Natural And Safe?
Knowing exactly what’s safe and what’s not it’s tricky. Fortunately, the internet is here to save the day. A quick search answers many questions. But, always make sure to use only reputable sources.
If you’re wondering about certain ingredients, these are great resources to rely on:
  • EWG has a huge ingredient database. They provide science-backed information about the ingredients used in cosmetics and personal care.
  • ECOCERT is another reliable source to find out if certain ingredients are harmful or safe.

  • Is Clean Beauty Effective?
It depends on your expectations from a beauty product, and of course, the ingredients in it.
When we talk about skincare, “less is more” might not be the best option. You want fewer ingredients, yes. But mostly just less harmful ones, and more natural, effective ones.

It’s important to be cautious about what you put on your skin, but by doing so, you might compromise efficacy. You can’t expect a single ingredient to boost collagen, protect your skin, and keep it healthy and hydrated.
There is one key element for clean beauty to be effective: the right formulations.
If you want healthy, safe, and effective skincare products, you need different groups of ingredients in the formulations. Each group serves a specific function on your skin. These groups include emollients, humectants, and occlusives. Learn more about them here.
An alternative to making clean cosmetics more effective is adding non-toxic synthetics. Many clean beauty companies do this. At Dr. Lily Ros, we don’t use this approach. We craft highly effective skincare products with natural, clean ingredients. But our strong suit are our pharmacist-crafted formulations.
Our expert approach uses the ideal ratio of ingredients to boost efficacy and penetration. You get better results without compromising your health and well-being.

When it comes to products for babies or to treat eczema, active ingredients like hydroquinone or retinol aren't needed. Aim to get products with nourishing oils and soothing herbal extracts— like calendula. If possible, avoid products with essential oils.

  • So...Is Clean Beauty Worth it?
If you care about your health and wellbeing— yes. Clean beauty is worth it. But always make sure you’re supporting companies that have your best interest at heart.

Some companies choose profit over quality. They use unsafe ingredients and fillers to make a better profit, but fool you to think they have “clean products”.
Always do your research on a company and the ingredients they use before buying. When you do this, you make sure your beauty products are worth it.

  • Should You Use Ingredients That Might be Toxic But Aren’t Banned by The FDA?
The safety of certain ingredients is highly controversial.
In the EU, there are 1,328 chemical ingredients banned from cosmetics and beauty products. The FDA only banned 11. These banned substances by the EU are known or suspected to cause cancer, genetic mutation, among other issues. 2
The FDA says they’re still allowed because of a lack of studies to support their toxicity.
Truth is, these chemicals might not kill you or harm you. But that doesn't mean you should be using them every day. You need safe ingredients in your cosmetics. Ingredients you feel confident and safe using.
Down the line, a product using these ingredients might harm you. Parabens, phenoxyethanol, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, talc, and phthalate, are a few ingredients you should avoid.
The lack of these toxic ingredients is what makes clean beauty worth it.

  • Why Are Some Natural Beauty Products More Expensive?
Some clean beauty brands tend to be more expensive than their non-clean counterparts. But finding affordable clean beauty is possible.
The reason for this is because natural ingredients are more expensive than synthetics and fillers in this industry.
Also, certified organic ingredients are more expensive than non-certified ones. Clean beauty tents to have better quality and sustainably sourced ingredients.
Sustainable packaging like glass jars, wood, and recyclable plastics, are more expensive too. All these things add up to make clean beauty more expensive.
Clean beauty might not be as affordable, but it’s better for you, for your skin, and for our planet.
  • What is Your Role as a Consumer?
Education is highly important, so keep coming back to read our blogs. Our goal is to inform our readers, so you make better choices when it comes to cosmetics and clean beauty.
When you buy new products, make sure the brand is honest and transparent. Ask these questions before shopping:
  • Are their ingredients sustainable?
  • If the packaging is plastic, is it BPA-free? Is it recyclable?
  • What type of chemicals do they use?
  • Where are they sourcing their ingredients?
  • Are all of their ingredients organic?
  • What certifications do they have, if any?
  • Based on EWG, what’s the rate of the ingredients used in their products?
*  EWG rates ingredients from 1-10 based on their safety. To find out the rate of an ingredient click here.
Informed decisions are better decisions.

How to Change Your Skincare Routine From Summer To Fall?

10/17/2020

Picture

As the seasons begin to change and the weather starts getting colder, your skincare routine should change as well. Switching your skincare routine from summer to fall is key to keep your skin healthy and hydrated.

Your skin is the most important barrier against microbes, pollution, and environmental toxins. When temperature and humidity drop, your skin barrier is the first one getting affected.

The cold, dry weather causes your skin to get dry. That’s why changing your skincare routine for autumn is so important. Dry skin makes you more susceptible to inflammation, irritation, sensitivity, and wrinkles.

  • When to Change Your Skincare Routine for Autumn?
The weather in fall is unpredictable. Some days the sun is out and you still get to wear your favorite summer dress. Other days the temperature drops and it’s suddenly sweater weather.
When you notice this change and you need an extra layer to go outside, you need an extra layer on your skin too. The same way you protect yourself from the cold, you should protect your skin.

  • What Causes Your Skin to Get Dry in The Fall?
There are many reasons why your skin changes along with the weather.
Factors like humidity dropping, a hot shower, and using a heater inside your home have an effect on your skin. These factors dry out your skin and cause inflammation.
To prevent and reverse these effects switching your skincare routine for fall is key. As it gets colder, you need to soothe and hydrate your skin.

  • How to Change Your Skincare Routine to Autumn?
When the temperature starts dropping you need to restore and maintain your skin barrier. To achieve that, you need an effective moisturizer.
Your moisturizer should be the main change in your skincare routine. Due to heaters, hot showers, and humidity, your skin needs extra hydration.
The best moisturizer for fall should have a rich texture— but shouldn’t be greasier.
There are 3 key ingredients your skincare products for fall should always have. Missing any of them causes delays or dysfunction of your skin barrier repair process.

          1. Emollients:
Emollients help soothe and soften your skin. They’re great for treating a cracked and altered skin barrier. Emollients don’t allow moisture to evaporate from your skin, keeping it hydrated— an essential for autumn.
Examples of emollients are natural oils like almond oil, argan oil, hemp seed oil, green tea seed oil, etc.
The downside of emollients is that if you have oily skin, over-using emollients can clog pores. If you have oily skin, choosing ingredients that won’t clog your pores it’s important. Sunflower oil, Argan oil and shea butter are non-comedogenic.

 2. Occlusives:

Occlusives prevent water loss by acting as a shield for your skin. To keep your skin hydrated, occlusives are more potent than emollients. They’re key to maintain moisture in your skin.
Some ingredients acting as occlusives are cupuacu butter, candelilla wax, beeswax, etc.

        3. Humectants
Humectants absorb water and improve your skin hydration. Humectants usually draw water from the weather and use it to keep your skin hydrated and plump. To make the best out of humectants, they should be used along with occlusives.
Too much humectant without occlusives in dry weather causes further skin dryness. That’s why a well-balanced formulation is critical when you change your skincare routine to fall.
Examples of humectants are glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea, etc.

Other ingredients you should look for when buying skincare products for fall are:
  • Vitamin E
  • Antioxidants
  • Anti-pollution: We need anti-pollution ingredients especially in fall for greenhouse effect. Some examples of anti-pollutants are Ginger Lily extract and some algae extracts.
  • Clinically proven herbal extracts

  • Other  Essential Tips For Fall Skincare
         1. Avoid Hot Showers
Hot showers in fall and winter are a great way to escape from the cold and soothe yourself. But hot showers cause your skin to get dry— especially if you shower for a long time.
Hot showers damage the skin barrier by washing off the skin’s natural oils. As soothing as they’re, try to keep the water a little cooler, especially if you’re feeling your skin dryer. This helps your skin stay hydrated during colder weather.
         2. Use a Cleanser With Moisturizer
To give extra hydration to your skin when you need it the most, which is during fall and winter, use a cleanser with moisturizer in it.
This gives your skin an extra boost of hydration. It’s a perfect way to switch your skincare routine to fall and avoid breakouts.
         3. Keep Using Sunscreen
Although UV rays are stronger during summertime, they’re still there in fall and winter. And they still cause damage to your skin.
When you switch your skincare routine, you should keep using sunscreen to protect your skin from sun damage.
       4. Use a Humidifier at Home
During fall and winter, a humidifier should go along with your skincare routine. Adding a humidifier in your room boosts your skin hydration— which is key for autumn.

  • What’s The Best Moisturizer For Fall?
Choosing the best moisturizer for fall is key for an effective skincare routine change. When looking for the perfect one, make sure it contains the 3 main ingredients mentioned above:

  • Emollients
  • Occlusives
  • Humectants

A perfect ratio of these three ingredients in your skincare is key to keep your skin hydrated and flawless. Even when the weather is cold and bitter.
Our 100% natural DNA protection moisturizer is the best option for fall moisturizers. Its ingredients are clinically proven to help your skin stay healthy and hydrated. When you’re changing your skincare routine from summer to fall, our moisturizer is a must-have.

our skin is the largest organ of your body, and like any other organ, it needs care and hydration to work properly. Due to the skin’s exposure to harsh external factors like pollution, UV rays, and cigarette smoke, protecting it is absolutely necessary.
Even though aging is an inevitable part of life, all these external factors speed up the process in your skin. But don’t worry—  you can slow this process down with a healthy diet, a non-toxic lifestyle, and proper skincare. 1
By gifting your skin with nature's most nourishing ingredients, it rejuvenates itself. Your body is a miraculous system, and it will heal itself when given the proper care.
These 4 ingredients give you radiant skin, no matter how old you are. And clinical studies prove their efficacy. Relying on natural ingredients to protect your skin is key for an efficient skincare routine.
These are nature’s best options for younger looking skin:

            1. Green Tea Seed Oil:
Green tea seed oil does wonders for your skin. Its complex mixture of powerful antioxidants protects your skin by fighting free radicals.
Free radicals are unstable molecules our body produces through metabolism. They’re also produced by external factors like UV rays and air pollution. Free radicals are the first cause of aging. 2
Green tea seed oil has a direct effect on skin aging inhibition. It suppresses collagen degradation and protects your skin from UV radiation, preventing free radicals from damaging your skin. 3
And don’t worry if your skin is naturally oily, green tea seed oil contains epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which helps in decreasing oil production. Making it a perfect addition for any type of skin.  4
It’s also rich in fatty acids like omega-3, 6, and 9, giving your skin a smooth feel and a glowing look. Green tea seed oil it’s easily absorbed into your skin, leaving it baby-soft and hydrated.

               2. Sea Lavender:
Sea lavender is your best bet for acne-free younger looking skin. It has antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a key ingredient for your skin care routine.
It keeps your skin healthy by unclogging your pores and inhibiting acne breakouts.
Sea lavender is a great natural solution to slow down the signs of aging. Like green tea seed oil, it contains antioxidants that help fight free radicals—  reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
Sea lavender also stimulates collagen production and hyaluronic acid formation. What does this mean? It helps to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. And it makes your skin firmer and youthful. It's also amazing at lessen discoloration and dark spots. 5

          3. Rosehip Seed Extract:
Rosehip seed extract comes from the fruit and seeds of the rose plant. It’s one of nature’s works of art that benefits our skin. This extract contains vitamins and essential fatty acids— two important components for a glowing skin.
Thanks to its content of vitamin E, vitamin A, and fatty acids like omega-3,6, and 9, it keeps your skin rejuvenated. It also minimizes the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and restores elasticity— giving your skin firmness.  6
Rosehip seed extract is amazing for moisturizing and hydrating your skin. Its oil is easily absorbed into your skin, boosting its antioxidant power. 7
By including it in your skin care routine, you keep your skin protected from sun damage and naturally bright and exfoliated.

          4. Cupuaçu Butter:
Cupuaçu butter is the Amazon Rainforest's most powerful age fighting ingredient. Studies show it’s rich in phytosterols— antioxidants that fight skin-damaging free radicals.
Cupuaçu butter also contains polyphenols, which help to combat the damage caused by free radicals. Such antioxidant power offers elasticity and true healing to your skin. And it’s ideal to combat dryness, eczema, psoriasis, etc. 8
It also improves the skin’s protective barrier. And thanks to its hydrophilic properties (aka water-loving properties), it offers true hydration to the skin. 9
A study proved cupuaçu butter attracts 440% of water compared to 289% for shea butter, and 250% for lanolin. This makes it a vital ingredient to keep your skin hydrated and plump.
Cupuaçu butter keeps your skin protected from pollution and ultraviolet radiation. Its quick absorption into your skin helps reduce the signs of aging— giving you flawless skin. You’ll be amazed by its incredible properties.

Does Natural Mean Safe?
Nowadays there are many options of skincare to choose from. Most of them have a long list of ingredients you can’t even pronounce. This feels overwhelming— especially if you have sensitive skin, and knowing what’s in your cosmetics is a must.
Most skincare products contain chemical ingredients that are harsh on your skin— and 60% them get absorbed into your bloodstream. Some of these chemicals have huge health consequences on your body and hormones. That’s why pregnant women can’t use them. 10
The good news is nature offers a wide variety of healing plant-based ingredients that protect, restore, and rejuvenate your skin, without being harsh— and without compromising your health and well-being. But this doesn’t mean all natural products are safe.
Just like nature has incredibly healing plants, it also gives us some, like poison ivy or poison oak, that causes rashes and irritation in your skin.
Many plant-based and natural ingredients haven’t been studied to see the effect they have on a fetus— like essential oils (which is why you won’t find them in our products).
Entrusting the health of your skin to natural products gives your body a much-needed break from harmful chemicals. And a healthy looking skin you’ll love. But knowing what’s safe, even if it’s natural, is key.
If you’re ready to give your skin a new glow, try our 100% Natural Phyto Youth Cream crafted specially to restore your skin’s elasticity. And of course— to make you look and feel younger.
Our cream features these 4 natural and organic ingredients to ensure you achieve amazing results. Tap here to start healing your skin.

*All of our products are safe for pregnant women. We source the highest-quality natural ingredients and use pharmacist crafted formulations to boost your skin’s health without putting your well-being at risk.

Do those little wrinkles make you bold and beautiful?

Sometimes I look in the mirror and think, “OMG, I have so many more lines under my eyes than I had ten years ago.” But one second after that, I ask myself, “Do I want to go back ten years just to have younger skin?”
My answer is a most definite NO.
I’m happier right now, and I feel more secure emotionally and financially than ten years ago. I have two Amazing little kids, and I have a marriage that friends tell me they envy.
I have a beautiful home. I’m doing a job that I’m passionate about. I have lovely people helping me every day with my business, and I didn’t know them even one year ago. I’m not saying that my life is perfect. Our kids make our home a mess  100 times a day. I have financial challenges, and I don’t always agree with my husband, but at the end of the day, I’m a happy person. I adore every moment of my life.
And these lines reflect how much effort I’ve put into my life and my experiences along the way. One of the lines is from the two years that I was far from my husband during his residency, one is from the anxious night before my pharmacy board exam,  and a big one is from the day I learned my father had colon cancer.
Without these wrinkles, I couldn’t be who I am. These wrinkles make me gorgeous! These wrinkles have transformed me into the most beautiful and happiest woman in the universe.
I firmly believe your under-eye wrinkles have done the same for you. Aging is the process of making you bold and beautiful. That’s not to say I don’t value caring for my skin. However, to me, beauty is more about how you feel than how you look.
Skin “care” is about doing something that makes me feel good. Knowing that my skin is healthy, glowing, and protected, makes me feel confident. Applying a little blush for that sun-kissed look (whether for that important Zoom call or just because) makes me feel healthier.
I care about what goes into and on my body. I create and use skincare with only the purest, most exquisite and high-quality ingredients. Let’s revisit those pesky eye wrinkles: I use only my 100% Natural Phyto Reparative Eye Balm. The Eye Balm’s key ingredients are squalene from France, Cupuaçu butter from the Amazon rainforest, raspberry seed extract from Chile, French amino acids, and green tea seed oil from Japan.
By using only the nature’ purest ingredients, I can be confident that the wrinkles around my eyes that I earned by having lived a full and happy life are being protected and treated gently and effectively. You can have that same confidence!
